The Uganda Money Lenders Association (UMLA) is a national umbrella organization for registered and licensed money lenders operating in Uganda. We aim to foster professionalism, integrity, and mutual support among our members to ensure a stable and trustworthy financial ecosystem.

Liaison with UMRA

We act as a bridge between licensed lenders and the Uganda Microfinance Regulatory Authority (UMRA) to ensure compliance and smooth regulation.

To become a licensed money lender, one must:

  • Register a legal entity.

  • Prepare the required documentation.

  • Apply for a license through the Uganda Microfinance Regulatory Authority (UMRA).

  • Meet the capital and compliance requirements set by the law.

  • Obtain the application form from UMRA.

  • Provide all necessary documents (business registration, premises, capital, etc.).

  • Pay the prescribed licensing fee.

  • Undergo inspection and approval by UMRA.

  • Receive a valid Money Lender’s License.

A genuine lender is one who:

  • Is licensed by UMRA.

  • Displays a valid license at their business premises.

  • Operates transparently and charges fair interest rates.

  • Issues formal loan agreements and receipts.

Current Status of the Association

The Uganda Money Lenders Association has established a fully functional secretariat that coordinates all administrative, training, and member engagement activities.
We continue to strengthen collaboration with UMRA, organize sectoral dialogues, and expand membership across the country.
